Smoke Without Fire: Episode 1

The town of Odeodunbi lay shrouded in an eternal gloom, as if the sun had forgotten its existence. The air reeked of smoke, but there was no fire in sight. It was as if the very fabric of reality had been infused with the acrid scent of burning. Every local hid behind the confines of their houses, fearful of what lurked outside.

Dr. Ikumapayi Abolore stepped out of her car and onto the cracked asphalt of Odeodunbi’s main street. She had been summoned to this forsaken town to investigate a series of bizarre occurrences. The locals were tight-lipped, but the whispers of strange happenings had reached the ears of the authorities.

A shiver went down her spine, despite the sweltering heat. Something was off in Odeodunbi. Something that made her skin crawl. As she strolled toward the town head’s office, Ikumapayi felt eyes on her. She whisked around, her eyes falling on a figure watching her from a corner.

Tall, imposing, and shrouded in seclusion, the figure seemed to embody the very essence of the town’s eerie atmosphere. She felt a jolt of adrenaline, but when she moved a step further to confront the figure, it disappeared.

The smoke-filled air seemed to swirl around her, carrying an unsettling whisper “Welcome to Odeodunbi, Dr. Abolore. You’ll be staying here… forever.” Ikumapayi anxiously turned around. “What? Who is there?” She queried the nothingness.

The smoke-filled air whizzed. Ikumapayi fastened her pace towards the town head’s office. Ikumapayi’s skin crawled as she approached the town head’s office. The building seemed to loom over her, its walls bearing the weight of secrets untold.

She pushed open the creaky door of the town head’s office, stepping into a dimly lit room that seemed frozen in time. Her heart raced with anticipation. The air was thick with the scent of old paper and stale coffee.

Baale Ologbonlagba, the town head, looked up from the papers on his desk. His eyes narrowed as he took in Ikumapayi’s city-bred appearance. “Dr. Abolore,” he said, his voice like a low growl. “I wasn’t sure you’d actually show up.”

Ikumapayi smiled, trying to put the Baale at ease. “I’m here to help, Baale. What’s been going on in Odeodunbi?” Baale Ologbonlagba leaned back in his chair, his eyes clouding over. “It’s been… strange,” he said. “People acting out of character, hearing things in the night, seeing shadows where there are none.” He leaned forward, his voice dropping to a whisper. “And then there’s the smoke. It’s everywhere, but there’s no fire. It’s like the town itself is burning from the inside out.”

Ikumapayi’s skin crawled as she listened to the Baale’s words. She had dealt with some weird cases before, but this one seemed different. “What do you think is causing it, Baale?” she asked, her eyes locked on his.

Baale Ologbonlagba hesitated, glancing around the room as if he feared being overheard. “I think it’s something ancient,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “Something mysterious that’s been awakened.”

Ikumapayi’s mind was racing with possibilities. She knew she had to dig deeper, to uncover the secrets that Odeodunbi seemed determined to keep hidden.
