In a landmark decision, the Federal Government has on Friday, March 7, 2025, adopted the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ogun State, as a Federal University. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the president (Information and Strategy) made this known via a press release.
This development marks a significant milestone in the history of education in Nigeria.
A Tribute to Educational Icons
President Tinubu’s approval of the adoption is a tribute to two educational icons: Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Dr. Tai Solarin. Awolowo pioneered the revolutionary free education program in Western Nigeria, while Solarin dedicated his life to educating children and imparting patriotic and leadership values.
The transition of TASUED into a Federal University of Education is a strategic step in the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening teacher education and enhancing the quality of instruction across all educational levels. With this development, the Federal Government now oversees three (3) specialized education universities, including Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education in Owerri and Adeyemi Federal University of Education in Ondo.

As a federal institution, TASUED will be the first federally owned tertiary school in the Ogun East senatorial district. With its well-developed infrastructure and academic programs, the transition is expected to require minimal federal investment.
