 Probiotics and Gut Health

Today’s topic is as simple as the article will be, as we will be diving into Probiotics and gut health, relation, and food sources for probiotics.

During my final year in school, I was able to carry out research on Probiotics and depression. Along the line, I discovered the benefits of Probiotics (health beneficial Microorganisms) to your gut health (health of your Digestive system)

What are these gut health problems you may want to ask?

  1. One common gut health problem includes indigestion, which can be caused by certain medications, inappropriate meal placement/timing, spicy foods, overeating, and stress.

While going through research papers and discovering stress as a major cause of gut health problems, I was curious, which led me to dive deeper to gain more understanding.

You see, stress alone can lead to the body system imbalance and making an individual susceptible to different kinds of illnesses, and gut health problems are not an exception. Stress can disrupt digestion, it can also increase stomach acid production, leading to heartburn, and ulcers in some cases.

  1. Diarrhea
  2. Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD)
  3. Food Intolerances

How does this probiotic help with gut health?

  1. Due to stress, poor diet, or consumption of antibiotics (Which kills probiotics), there could be a gut bacteria imbalance. Consumption of probiotics can aid in balancing the gut bacteria.
  2. Probiotics improve absorption of micronutrients and aid in digestion, thereby reducing digestive issues such as bloating, IBS, diarrhea, and constipation.

Foods with Probiotics include;

Banana, fermented foods (Pap, Garri, fufu, Ugba, Iru, Kunu), palm wine and berries.

There are also supplements available to help with effective probiotics intake. Visit your dietitian for better nutrition Therapy
