Last week, we reported on the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission’s (FCCPC) directive to MultiChoice Nigeria Limited to suspend its planned price hike for DStv and GOtv subscription packages. However, in a brazen disregard for regulatory directives, MultiChoice went ahead with the price increase, prompting the FCCPC to take drastic action.
The FCCPC has filed charges against MultiChoice Nigeria Limited and its Chief Executive Officer, John Ugbe, at the Federal High Court in Lagos. The charges border on willful implementation of a price hike contrary to the Commission’s directives, an offence which violates Section 33(4) of the FCCPC Act.
The FCCPC’s action demonstrates its commitment to protecting consumers against exploitative business practices and ensuring that companies comply with regulatory directives.
The FCCPC’s decision to take MultiChoice to court is a bold statement of its intent to enforce regulatory compliance and protect consumer rights. As the case progresses , we will be watching closely and providing updates as more information becomes available.
